Project E – CD Package and Booklet

Research

After having an overview on the new project brief, we were asked to give Virgin a visit,
& I purposely went in the middle of the week, just to have a peaceful quiet surrounding,
so i can go through its various sections smoothly & take my time.
well, as I entered I asked for permission to take photos, even though i had my uni ID and everything; they didnt allow me,
there is a long list of regulations to go through before having a permission, which should be done at their main branch.
anyhow, I respected their policy & promissed them not to take any photo,
although the manager was gerously understanding and gave me the permission of taking 2 photos but I just denied.

anyway, walking through Virgin as an observer, analyzer, & graphic designer was totaly different experience,
I get lost somehow in between with their massive collection of CDs & DVDs, but exploring the CD jackets, DVD package, & typography art was great.
What grabbed my attention the most, was that small corner with all meditation music CDs, as small as the corner was as great as the influence it lead me to.

I researched:
The CDs’ package/ jacket
The typography (visually & vocabulary)

& got me one as well

Concept formation

I wanted to explore the interactive design field with  my CD project
So yeah, the CD jacket is basically a card, it’s a card that you get for your own.
big enough to sit on your desk as a piece of art, small enough
& it has a page at the end, for your achievement list so far, & bonus rewards
I deeply know that this would definitely please a person,
no matter how many times you hae failed at this stage … looking back at your achievements will always push you further & that the feeling you wanna have after taking a break for awhile with the meditation music, you definitely need a boost …

I wanted something related to the nature, & it’s effect on the person’s psychology
I’ve started with the Sunset mood ..
which give a peacefulness and pleasure feeling ..
taking a good shot of a sunset wasnt really easy as i thought,
specially with the limited time you have before waving goodbye for the sun.
This was the best image taken ..

The sunset didnt give me the effect that I really pictured & wanted,
its not really there,
Then I moved to the Cloud theme:
I was inspired from that iphone cloud program, where you play the cloud video & live the experience on laying on the cloud, with all the sound effects ..
& here was my trial;

I also carried on exploring other themes,
getting influenced by the proverb that says” Every tide has its ebb” inspired me,
& I did my research about the sea & its effect on the human psychology.

No wonder why the resorts & rehab centers are chosen to sit at the coast lines …

Brand Identity
started by analyzing a case( concept, naming, typography, color scheme)

The Islands of the Bahamas is a brand identity and a campaign which sets goals to:

  • Discover, capture, and communicate the unique essence of the Bahamas.
  • Position the Bahamas as the preferred vacation choice.
  • Distinguish the Islands of Bahamas from other sand and sea destination.
  • Inspire the tourism office, the souvenir Manufactures, and the media to use the new identity.

what was concluded after the meeting is that:

The image of the logo should reflect:
* Care + support the community.
* High quality & innovation.
* fulfill a need for knowledge.

Adjective revealed:

Design Approached:
* Not too abstract.
* Satiety & direct.
* circular & rectangular shape is preferable.

Logo Concept:

The logo illustrate the concept of Zayed Institute stretching out, building a bridge with the community, reaching the three drawn paths of training, continuing education, and community service. Zayed Institute aims for out reaching the local communities, extending to the middle east, & beyond.

With the red color boosting the energy, red logo goes for Training department.

While the Education department gets the blue logo, by the spring of knowledge & education Zayed Institute waters the community.

& by the green logo, the Community Service department of Zayed Institute flourish & plant the community with its services.

For a better present & brighter future Zayed Institute aims.

The Blueprint of Baby First year calendar Design

starts with the  Project Brief
>> As you understand the characteristics and applications of design principles, in this project you will demonstrate your understanding and creativity working with shapes, colors, type creating 4 month calendar design. Capturing characteristics of any emotion or objects to express a beauty within a content, organization, or your own-make-believe world. You might want to write or use others’ poem or quotations if applicable. The end product will be 4 month calendar and 2 other applications such as cd overall, book cover or postcard. You’ll practice how to modify your design according to different design specifications.

I’ve started  in general putting in mind the characteristics of calendars:
1)    Numbers + type (12 months/ 30-31 days)
2)    Presentation  form – stand (desk space) / hang (wall & eyelevel)
3)    Cycle of the year
4)    Features & functionality
5)    Audience (children/ youth/ companies)

I made an over sky look at different calendar design, without narrowing the search to babies calendar or any other. What grabbed my attention the most was breaking the rules of the formal looking calendar, along with unique design of layout which met the functionality aspect as well. & for some reasons I was more into the curvy circular lines than the sharp angular shapes, more into the vivid bright colors than the dull ones.

At this stage I wanted to move more into my theme, the baby look & feel theme along the side of the adult-ly touch since it ganna be used by parents. So I went off the calendar path research, explored the baby card field, it was so inspiring …

Further Research

Now to give the design a touch of what I’d call it seriousness, since it would be used by parents (adult group), I started researching through totally different field, it’s the baby book covers, & observed the integration of the text with the design …

I knew that the choice of font type I would choose would make a lot of difference, it can break the theme easily, or build on it perfectly …
So it’s true that the text adds its magical touch …
